Artist's Statement:
Throughout the course of my work, I have been inspired by a strong fascination with print media and the images displayed in popular magazines and newspapers. As we go about our daily lives, we are inundated by the visual images and messages from the advertising, entertainment, and fashion industries. A vast amount of effort and resources is expended each year to create and disseminate this material. We may glance at it just briefly, yet we absorb it, retain it. They inform us, influence our purchases, and work in support of the latest trends and fads. Images and text gleaned from magazine advertising, fashion photo layouts, and even medical textbooks provides the inspiration and creative fodder for my artwork. For nearly eight years, I have culled words and pictures from thousands of pages of print media. These clippings are organized into files to create the bank of raw material from which I derive the subject matter and themes presented in my artwork.
Throughout my work, there have been several keen points of interest which I frequently revisit. They have become characteristic of my entire catalog. The paintings presented here are characterized by bold colors, stark contrasts between dark and light tones, and sharp lines composing the depicted forms. Some examples demonstrate the use of text. Perspective is often distorted. Spatial relationships between the forms in the paintings are often manipulated. Most evident in the works produced over the last year, the painted forms are often reduced to flattened planes of color. Through the elimination of line, the closed forms are often breached, further heightening the tension between foreground and background. |
